What makes a barkeeper?

 

A barkeeper, also called bartender or barman, works behind the counter of a bar. His task is to serve the mainly alcoholic drinks to the bar guests. In this context, his repertoire goes from pouring wine in a glass to the professional mixing of a cocktail. Barkeeper who are specialised in mixing cocktails are also called bartender.

 

How can someone become a barkeeper?

 

Actually, barkeeper, barman / barmaid or bartender are still not legally protected job titles, but only designations for the executed job at the bar. However, there are a multitude of possible vocational trainings and further educations to learn the focuses of this occupation. Mostly, these are offered by private bar schools, which prepare for the exam of the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce “certified bartender”. Before he or she can pass this exam, the examinee must prove whether that he / she has fulfilled an adequate professional training or approximately three to four years of job experience. Then, an advanced training to be promoted can be accomplished. After the successful completion of this training the bar masters are able to manage independently their own bar business.

In hotels, barkeepers are named according to their field of activity. So the “young helper on the bar” is for example called “commis de bar” at the beginning, then “demi chef de bar” (representative of the bar) and with further job experience and the assumption of responsibility they can rise to a leading barkeeper, a so-called “chef de bar”.

 

Where barkeepers are deployed?


Beside typical cocktail bars and hotel bars good barkeepers are also in demand in the event gastronomy, on cruise liners or in discotheques.

There are a handful of professional journals for barkeepers. They are organised in the occupational union of the “German Barkeeper Union” (DBU), and its international umbrella association is called “International Bartenders Association” (IBA).
